If your dealership cleans up car photos with remove.bg, you now have a deadline. Remove.bg is shutting down its standalone service on December 1, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. CET. After that, the website and the self-service API go offline.
That leaves about seven weeks. It's enough time to switch calmly, as long as you start now. Here's what the remove.bg shutting down news means for your lot, and how to find a remove.bg alternative before it affects your listings.
Remove.bg confirmed the details in its official FAQ. The company has been part of Canva since 2021. Canva is now moving background removal into its own platform instead of running two products.
On December 1, these stop working:
One group is safe. Enterprise API contracts continue as normal. If your company signed an enterprise deal with remove.bg, nothing changes for you yet.
Remove.bg's FAQ names a replacement for each way people used it. Canva acquired Leonardo.ai in 2024, so every option stays under the same owner.
How you used remove.bg | Where you're being sent | What to know |
Website, single images or bulk batches | Canva's Background Remover | Same technology, inside a design platform |
Desktop app | Canva bulk background removal | Works in the Canva web or desktop app |
Photoshop plugin | Affinity | Free app, but background removal needs Canva Pro |
Self-service API | Leonardo.ai API | A new integration with its own migration guide |
Enterprise API | No change | Contracts continue as normal |
For a designer, the remove.bg Canva move is a small change. For a dealer, it raises a practical question. Canva is a design platform. Your team would be opening a design tool every morning to clean up 40 photos of a trade-in SUV. A dedicated car background removal tool skips the design step entirely.
Cost is the other thing to check. Remove.bg's own FAQ notes that background removal in Affinity, Canva's pro editing app, needs a Canva Pro subscription. Look at Canva's plan page before you assume the replacement is free. If you liked paying per photo, a subscription changes your math.
Plenty of dealers never log into remove.bg. It often runs inside another tool. That's why the remove.bg shutting down date can surprise a dealership.
Start with your own team. Ask whoever edits photos whether they use the website or the Photoshop plugin. If they do, you know your switch date.
Then check your vendors. Some website providers and dealer management systems call the remove bg API behind the scenes. If one of yours does, your photos could stop processing on December 1 with no warning on your end.
A short email does the job: "Does any part of our photo workflow use remove.bg, and what's your plan for December 1?" If the vendor has an enterprise contract, you're covered. If they're on the self-service API, they have to move, and you want to know where. You can point them to our page on remove.bg API alternatives.
Paying users get different treatment depending on the plan. According to remove.bg's FAQ:
Don't skip that last step. Your accountant will want those invoices at tax time, and after December 1 you can't download them.
Some dealer groups and marketplaces built remove.bg directly into their own systems. If that's you, the self-service API stops accepting requests on December 1.
Remove.bg's suggested path is Leonardo.ai's API, which publishes its own migration guide. That's still a new integration. Your developer needs new keys and endpoints either way.
Since the code changes regardless, it's worth asking whether a general API is the right fit for car photos. If most of your images are vehicles for sale, you can migrate off the remove.bg API to Car Background AI with a new key and endpoint.
Our car image API runs the same pipeline as our app and returns a finished photo, so the step where your system added a background after the cutout can go.
Here's the part most switching guides miss. Remove.bg gives you a cutout. A cutout is not a listing photo.
Someone still has to place the car on a background. That's where most tools fall short on car photos.
A car with no ground shadow looks like it's floating. Glass needs care too, since a cluttered lot shouldn't show through the windows. Edges around mirrors and antennas can look rough. If the floor in the new background doesn't match the camera angle, buyers notice, even if they can't say why.
Use your hardest photos, not your best ones. Pick a car with tinted windows shot in a busy lot. Add a dark car parked in shade, one with a roof antenna and a close-up of a wheel.
Then run a full set of 20 or more angles for one vehicle. One hero shot looks fine in almost any tool. Consistency across the whole set tells you if it works on a marketplace like AutoTrader or CarGurus.
Dealer volume moves with the season. Pay-as-you-go pricing lets you spend more in a busy month and less in a slow one. A subscription charges the same either way.
This is the problem Car Background AI was built for. It works only on cars. It returns the finished photo on a studio scene, with shadows and glass handled. With bulk car photo editing, a full vehicle set goes through in one batch.
You buy credits as you need them, with no subscription. To see how it lines up feature by feature, read our full remove.bg comparison.
You don't need a big project plan. The remove.bg shutting down date is fixed, so work backward from it.
This week, check your team and email your vendors. Find out where remove.bg actually lives in your process.
Before November 1, test at least one replacement on real inventory. Monthly subscribers can let the free final renewal run while they test.
During November, run your new tool alongside remove.bg. Use up any pay-as-you-go credits and export your invoices.
By the last week of November, switch fully. Don't plan your cutover for December 1 itself. If something breaks, you want a few working days to fix it before new arrivals pile up.
Remove.bg shutting down doesn't have to slow your lot down. Dealers who check their workflow now and test early will switch without a single listing going out with a messy background.
The fastest way to know if a replacement fits is to try it on your own cars. Car Background AI gives you 10 free credits with no card and no sales call. Run three cars from this week's arrivals, the messy ones, and see what comes back.
